Website Information Page

What is ‘Busk Idol’ about?

Busk Idol is a competition being run by Stockton on Tees Borough Council to help select 10 musical buskers to receive the first ever Busking Licences issued for the Town. This licence will permit recipients to busk at selected locations within the Town Centre.

Who can enter the competition?

This competition is open to any musical busker over the age of 16, however places are limited and all applicants must be available to attend the following:

Who will Vote?

All eligible applicants will attend the initial short listing, where they will have the chance to perform. A panel of judges will select the 20 buskers who in the judges’ opinion performed the best.

The 20 selected buskers will then have the opportunity to record a 1-2 minute sound track. All 20 sound tracks will be played on BBC Radio Cleveland (4 per day).

Following each day's broadcast the general public will be able to vote for their favourite, by text or telephone directly to the studio.

These votes will produce 2 winners who will be announced each day.

The 10 finalists will then be invited to perform at selected locations in the Town Centre, during which time members of the public will be able to vote for their favourite finalist via the Busk Idol website or at specific voting points in the town centre.

What about prizes?

What will happen at the final?

A stage will be set up in the Town Centre, at this point a basic PA system will be provided. There will be jugglers, face painters and mime artists performing before the show begins and the BBC Radio Cleveland Roadshow will be present at the event. The final will be hosted by a BBC Radio Cleveland presenter. Each busker will perform for a set period of time, the audience will be encouraged to let the panel of celebrity judges know which busker is their favourite and will therefore influence the judges, but the winner and runners up will be the buskers who in the judgement of the celebrity panel performed best.
